Snowpack
- Instability Comment
-
About 16 inches of medium density snow was sitting on a firm old surface, much more than a thousand feet lower. I did a hasty column with my pole and found the new snow was very poorly bonded to the old firm surface that I couldn't easily punch my pole through. The new snow was not consolidated at all, certainly not enough to form a slab or propagate. There was a gentle west breeze where I was and no evidence of wind effect. It was late and I didn't go higher - there could have been some wind slab formation closer to the ridgeline. Overnight wind could change thing drastically as there is a lot of loose snow available for xport.
