Snake River Range
Sledded up to Red Peak. No signs of instability. Overcast thick cloud cover until becoming broken around 1400. No signs of reactive wind slabs up to 9800' even on open and exposed ridgelines on leeward terrain (see photo). Found old slabs that were unreactive in stability tests. 6-8" of recent snow since Sunday (2/18) above 8000'. Previous Feb storms has settled in a firm slab (1F-P hard). Dug on a NE aspect at 9500' and found no propagation. Deeper snowpacks such as this are showing significant healing trend of persistent weak layers. Total height of snow ranged from 230-300cm above 8500'. Snowpack appears more like a mid winter snowpack for this area. Rocky terrain where the snowpack is thin, shallow and wind affected continues to be the main concern for triggering a persistent slab.
