Traversed a South Facing slope on snowshoes with 2 people. No signs of instability until we began to descend on the Northern Aspect. Experienced whumphing, but no cracking. Dug a snow pit finding weak faceted layers at the very base of the snowpack. Performed a Compression test, got a CTM (12) with a sudden planar collapse.
