Went up to Scotts Pass today and dug a snowpit on an east facing slope at 9500'. As expected, I found a layered cake of facets and crusts sitting above a strong base. Height of snow was 52cm with surface hoar on N-E mid-upper elevation slopes (pictured below). The wind was doing a good of job knocking the SH down in exposed areas, as well as the sun in the late afternoon. Stability tests showed fractures initiating at two crust-over-facet interfaces (ECTN-17 @ 42cm above ground, ECTN-28 @ 28cm above ground), and did not propagate in my tests.
In upper BCC, snow is limited to NW-E facing upper elevation slopes. Nearly all south faces are bare.
Snowpack
Lots of different snow surfaces were traveled on. Loose faceted snow in areas protected from the wind and snow, wind crusts on exposed W/SW slopes, and melt-freeze crusts in between. Surface hoar observed on N-E facing slopes
