Widespread feathery surface hoar could become a persistent weak layer if it's buried intact. It was surviving well even on sunny slopes this afternoon.
Could see evidence of a recent natural avalanche involving wind drifted snow, likely from the New Years Eve east wind event...
Snowpack
Snow surface throughout the area was glistening with feathery surface hoar crystals..... Snow was sugary or faceted, making uphill travel difficult. Had to keep angle of attack low of felt like trying to walk uphill in a foot of soft sand.
