Red Flags Comment

Walked a while through large untouched meadows to try to trigger a collapse. No luck until I popped my ski on after digging a pit and slammed my heel down. BANG! Loud and clear on a N facing 8500' low angle slope.

Quick ECT showed propagation at 25 taps.

Snowpack

Instability Comment

The buried persistent weak layer is still reactive. Great indication that the snowpack is still unstable and steep slopes should be avoided.

Winds have done some damage to the surface snow. About 1/2" of graupel on the surface made for fast traveling conditions on skis. Sledding conditions were good as well though not a good day to get stuck as once you jump off the snow is bottomless and loose. Supportable enough but still relatively thin with large rocks lurking underneath surface.
