Went out to Mt. Washington to find some low elevation corn skiing on solar aspects. Was also interested in investigating surface conditions on shady aspects prior to incoming storm cycles. Southerly’s had melt freeze crusts that softened into pleasant corn skiing. North and Northeast aspects had lots of variability. I found a wide variety of sugary facets, breakable crusts with facets below, hard wind-board and heavily wind affected sastrugi and then areas completely scoured down to a firm rain crust from the beginning of January. Lower elevation north facing terrain in burned zones and meadows had the most consistent old powder and facets mostly below 6500ft to 5000ft. Higher elevation north facing terrain above 7000 ft had a mix of facets and wind-board but seemed to have less consistent faceting due to heavy wind affect compaction . Areas harboring facets will be important to assess once we receive a new load of snow. I imagine there will be a lot of spacial variability due to the inconsistency of these layers.
