Tincan Trees

We toured up the standard Tincan uptrack and observed poor snowpack structure. We dug pits at 1800 and 2200ft, both on W/NW aspects. In both pits we observed the three weak layers that appear to be quite widespread in the area. At 1800ft, a layer at 32cm failed but did not propagate at ECTN26. A more visible layer of buried surface hoar at 72cm failed and propagated at ECTP19. At 2200ft, a layer at 30cm failed and propagated at ECTP23 and a layer of buried surface hoar at 60 cm down failed and propagated at ECTP30. We saw several natural and human-triggered avalanches in the area and our party's first red flag came on our third run of the day when we observed shooting cracks from our turns in the trees.
