Snowpack

As we were approaching the treeline of Avalanche Crest, we heard a very loud whumph as we were following a fresh uptrack from this morning on a small convex feature BTL. We couldn't see any crack around us, so we dug down to see that the settlement likely happened 75cm down on top of a at least 3 different sun/temp. crust over facets. As the Avy Bulletin was calling for it, the strong solar radiation was consolidating that storm slab and making it very reactive on its weak interface with the old snow. Figuring that by the time we would reached the SW slopes of Avalanche Crest the sun would have time to do the same thing to our objective slope, we pulled the plug and retraced our step to the densely treed slopes. Still found some decent steep fun lines as a consolation prize.
