Quick report
Enjoyed a beautiful day out in Bass Creek on Sunday. Temperatures were in the teens with light and variable wind and little to no snow transport. Winds began to slightly increase later in the day and seemed to come from the NE. We dug two pits on a NW aspect at 7200’ with plans to ski the Pokie Wokie chute. Total snowpack was 140cm. Column test yielded CT4 on about 5cm of new snow (looked like it broke on buried surface hoar), CT14 25cm below surface on a double crust layer, and CT21 at 40cm below surface. With those CT results, we followed up with an ECT that resulted in ECTN18 on the 25cm crust layer. While the crust layer contained faceted snow, there were indications of rounding in that layer. Given the signs of recent avalanche activity and less than ideal pit results we decided to not ski the chute and instead skied a shorter north facing line and then toured up to Lappi point and skied NE to the lake. There was a buried, but stout crust around 7200’ in the NE chute that funnels down to the lake. Some minor sluff was released on steeper terrain in both areas. Given the lesser snowpack and lack of a consolidated base in the woods and talus fields along with the heavy brush on the summer trail, the exit got pretty western. Great day for character building!
Avalanche
Observed old, partially buried avalanche debris at about 6800’ on a north aspect below Lappi Lake. This occurred at a lower, steep rollover that historically slides.
