Quick report

On a west aspect at approx 5600' we found propagating results in our extended column after 8 taps from the wrist. ECTP8. This failure occurred below the most recent rain/temp crust on near surface facets about 30cms down. On our tour we could feel this crust was very widespread throughout the Lolo pass area with anywhere from 10-40 cms of new snow above it. We chose to only ski slopes below 30 degrees today after seeing the poor strong-over-weak structure and propagation in our snow pit. Snow depth in our pit at 5600' was 135cms. After clearing off the failed block we did not get any further propagation deeper in the snowpack. Weather was overcast with very light mixed precipitation and temps 32-33*F. Calm winds and isolated pockets of wind drifted snow on exposed ridge tops. We found decent skiing on low angle protected slopes.
