Skied Tallac today, descending around 2 pm. New snow amounts ranged from a trace at the trailhead to 2” above 9,000’. The North Bowl was typically wind affected and sculpted, but the new snow made the surface slightly softer, and somewhat enjoyable. From there, I moved onto a NE slope between 9300’ and 8700’. On this slope, the new snow sat atop firm old wind board that had begun to facet, with noticeably less wind affect. On the skier’s L wall, which faced more E and SE, there was a bit of a crust underneath, but it had become less supportable under the new snow, and was a bit punchy. In a confined feature, I did observe some very small loose dry sluffing, which was only a concern in the highest consequence terrain. From 8700’ to the trailhead, I skied a mix of surfaces. Shady slopes held a small amount of new snow atop mostly firm old snow. On sunny slopes, the new snow had already consolidated into the old snow, and where the slope was still receiving sun, it was textured, supportable pseudo corn. Where the slope had lost the sun, it had already refrozen, but was fully supportable. At the lowest elevations, this crust was breakable, and made for some difficult travel.
