Quick report

Noteworthy observations: 1. Extremely unstable 7cm facet layer (1mm facet size) bridge between 110-117cm HS (Height of Snow). 2. PST (Propagation Saw Test) END, sudden collapse at 50%, (Note: sudden unzipping as air escaped). 3. Audible ‘Whomps’ occurred when the excavated pit material was loaded onto the downside slope on both Friday and Saturday’s pits. Special note: strong on surface bonding, however a weak unstable layer is lurking below. Skier/Rider Concerns: If conditions were present to trigger this weak facet layer, the resulting failure could be substantial and propagate across a wide area. CT and ECT non reactive. ‘Red Flags’ deeper than one meter within the snow pack (see findings). Snow pack had consolidated 25cm from the previous days snow pit (similar aspect and elevation).

Location: Fireplug Cirque (West peak) Test slope: NNE, Date: 2/21/26, Time: 1200 Slope 28°, Temp 20°, Elevation: 9200; Clear skies, Total snow: 335cm HS, Light winds, Signs of significant recent snow transport, 110cm new snow, 7cm, 1mm facet layer between 110-117cm HS occurring between the new snow and old snow interface, CT (Compression Test) non reactive, ECT (Extended Column Test) non reactive, ST (Shovel Shear Test): Planer at facet layer (110-117cm), PST (Propagation Saw Test) END, sudden collapse at 50%, (Note: sudden unzipping as air escaped).
