Skinned up to Chair peak Tuesday morning intending to check out alpine north terrain. Bailed on our objectives at the chair north ridge due to observed wind slab and shooting cracks. Dialed back our terrain choices and skied down chair north, then ridgeline to snow lake, and then source lake. We then skinned up to Bryant couloir planning to take one more north facing run before the spring warmth cooked all the snow.
Avalanche
Around noon I skied into a small couloir feature approximately 500 feet skiers right of Bryant couloir. Triggered a ~6 inch deep slab avalanche which swept me off my feet and carried me on the surface ~200 vertical feet. Radioed to my partners, skinned back up the bed surface, and exited via No Fog Bowl. We think it was a poorly bonded storm slab avalanche from the new snow that fell Monday night. Triggered on the convexity on a steep north facing aspect at 5100’ and propagated ~50 feet.
