We managed to get eyes on a lot of terrain today. After traveling from Bryant Lake through the fault to Summit Creek, we sledded up to the col between Summit Glacier and Tabletop Glacier. About 20–30 cm of soft storm snow is sitting on a thin layer of stubborn surface hoar from the weekend. Compression tests came back moderate to hard, and the riding up high looked very good—but we lost our alpine visibility window and bailed back into the trees.
After crossing the highway, we headed into the Big Y drainage. There’s still plenty of debris in there from the natural cycle around January 14, but ski quality on north-facing slopes above the drainage looked pretty good. Open creeks eventually shut things down for us though—lesson learned. As they say, sometimes you’re the hammer, and sometimes you’re the nail ¯\(ツ)/¯
