Went out to look at the size and distribution of the weak layer of feathery surface hoar crystals that were buried on January 17th. 5 - 10cm of snow cover these crystals that we found are most preserved on north-east facing slopes between 1500 - 2100m. We found evidence of windloading in isolated areas that have stiffened the snow over this weak layer enough to create shooting cracks as we were sledding along cutbanks.
