Observation: Uintas

Went out in the afternoon in the Hoyt Peak area to check out the lower elevation snow since I haven't checked it out yet this season. Traveled from 6900 feet to 9K on the north half of the compass. Great series of storms made for all time riding conditions. For the most part, we did not travel in avalanche terrain so not much to report back. I was surprised to find a deep snowpack at 8800 feet where I dug a pit. I had no propagation on ECT's but noted persistent weak layers at 64 cms (25") down and 80 cms (31") down. The weak grains were rounding facets in both layers. Still not enough water weight to overburden the weaknesses in the snowpack where I was traveling. Density inversion in the storm snow which was probably a factor in steeper terrain. Moderate danger in the area we traveled.
