Quick Observation
Today we rode into Kakwa and didn't get above 1500m. But the views were excellent and we saw lots of loose wet avalanches from the past couple days and some old windslab crowns. South to west facing ridges were scoured to rock and all the Alpine snow looked wind affected. At valley bottom we felt a 5cm surface crust setting up. Deeper in the snowpack, down 20cm, we saw a thick ice crust. The persistent weak layer that has been keeping us in mellow terrain was down 40cm. The temperatures were warm, the sun was shining and the wind was calm.
