Observations from an AST class: Beautiful day with no wind. Many wind slabs have now faceted into soft, and almost rideable shape though conditions remain variable. 2 whumps from hard wind slab on facets, and moderate sudden compression test results down 30cm on slightly rounded surface hoar. See snowpack obs for more detail
Numerous loose wet on steep solar slopes observed. Based on reports from the Haines Avalanche Centre, suspect midweek last week.
Few recent reports, but this is the furthest north that we've heard of the surface hoar. 3 x Compression test moderate, sudden collapse down 30cm on rounded SH size 1-2mm [CTM (SC)]. No result from an extended column test [ECTN]. Tests were done on a 30 degree east-facing slope sheltered from NW winds. Whumpfing with approximately 20m propagation was observed on wind exposed slopes, with failure suspected on facets but we did not dig to verify.
