Quick Observation

The December 11th Surface Hoar. It's easy to find down 40 to 50 cm below the surface. It's widespread from the valley bottoms to the treed ridgelines. It might be in the alpine too, but we're not sure. It's got a slab above it, but it produces wildly different results in test profiles from sudden collapse to no result at all. But, a warm whopper of a storm is approaching and this layer is likely to go off. With that in mind, we're scaling our objectives way back tomorrow, we'll be seeking non avalanche terrain for our travels Friday.
