Excellent riding conditions in Silent Pass today. We found up to 45 cm new snow, adding to another 10-15 cm recent snow totaling upwards of 65 cm over a melt-freeze crust. At treeline the snow was loose and unconsolidated, we dug a test profile on a south aspect at 2100 m and found no slab properties within the storm snow. However we did see a large (size 2.5) natural avalanche in the alpine, the avalanche failed below a large cornice and propagated across an east facing ridge. We also saw a few smaller wind slab avalanches failing in steep, immediate lee alpine features. We suspect all these avalanches failed overnight Sunday-Monday with loading from new snow and wind.
