Skinned up the Cog, traversed under Jacob's Ladder into the Ammo. Originally planned on traversing towards Washington summit cone with expectations of exiting via the Cog depending on snow instability. Pit was dug at 4800ft on WSW aspect. CT and ECT yielding no instability results. New snow was mainly 4F in what appeared to be a uniform slab. However, a weak interface at 35cm was found after significant shearing/leveraging with shovel. Another weak interface at approximately 75cm rested on what appeared to be firm bed surface. Again, significant force with shovel caused movement. Snow was extremely wind affected throughout most of the upper snowfield areas, even scoured to firm icy surfaces. Lower down toward the north branch gully, snow softened significantly. Ski cuts and careful segmented skiing yield no signs of instability. A loose, soft and manageable sluff followed occasionally. Wind was blowing out of the NW and visibly transporting snow. Overall, new snow seems to be stubborn on this specific western aspect, however assume much variability throughout an area as large as the Ammo.
