Quick report
Went up Elephant’s Hump today as part of an AIARE 1 class. Snow surfaces were very wet and mushy. We saw lots of roller balls and pinwheels. We dug a pit at 8330ft on a N facing slope. The snow depth was 140cm. There was a thin ice layer clearly visible at 116cm with wetted facets underneath. In an extended column test, this layer failed on the 30th strike and propagated across the column. So it’s not very reactive anymore but if it does fail could result in a large avalanche, consistent with the forecast.
