Skies varied between the upper end of broken (BKN) with high, thin cloud bands at 10:30 in the Boulders and on Galena Pass to (OVC) in all areas observed north of pass. Sun breaks existed but were small and short-lived, giving better lighting to slopes for just long enough to pull out a camera. N of the pass, winds were light out of the W/SW with moderate gusts, and could be seen transporting snow on ridgelines very intermittently. Skies were OVC until passing Alturas, where clouds became obscured and visibility was 50-60' at times. On my return back over the pass close to 13:00, skies were OVC going over Galena, progressing to obscured (OBS) as I dropped down into the Boulder Foothills on my way back to Ketchum. Once past Baker Creek, it was snowing S1 to S2 until I reached Chocolate Gulch.

Snowpack

Due to the recent loading event and generally poor visibility during and after the most recent pulse of the storm, my main objectives were to (1) document any avalanche activity, (2) observe the weather impacting over a broad geographic area throughout multiple zones and (3) view wind effect both past and present. While visibility was generally significantly better this day than in the past 3-4 days, the lighting due to the high cloud cover and flat light made noting specific characteristics of slides more challenging. However, I was able to observe several large and many small avalanches despite conditions. 

Wind effect was most evident in alpine terrain in the Boulder Mountains as one would expect, with windward sides of ridges (S/SW) stripped down to have rock visible and leeward sides of ridges loaded heavily. With brief periods of good lighting, these loaded areas appeared to be a mix between soft deposits and more firm, textured snow. There were a 2 very small (D1) crowns just adjacent to ridgeline that appeared to be shallower wind slabs in the Boulders. Wind effect in the mountains in the Smokys and S. Sawtooths (Headwaters through Beaver) and the very small portion of the White Clouds visible from the road (David O'Lee, Blackman, etc.) had obviously sculpted ridgelines and mid-face features in the alpine, but no crowns were visible with the lighting. The Sawtooths north of Alturas were obscured due to cloud cover.

I observed several D2-D2.5 avalanches that ran in the Boulders and up the Headwaters drainage that likely failed on a weak layer in the upper portion of the snowpack (2/1 or 2/24) and had the characteristics of persistent slabs. I also observed 4 D1-D1.5 persistent slab slides. These all occurred at the upper end of middle or upper elevation terrain, and likely ran between 3/1-3/2. This section will be updated with occurrences as time allows.
