Quick report
Afternoon touring at Silver Fir found ski-penetration on 127mm skis ~boot-top and pole-penetration almost to the handle at all elevations. Where the snow was untracked, skiing was smooth and fine. After a single track, the snow stiffens quickly into concrete, especially at lower elevations. On the plus-side, skintracks were polished velvet and fast. Returning to pass-level, we felt a zipper-crust forming in late afternoon. No instability noted in the upper ~meter of snowpack. Trailbreaking in untracked snow was arduous and plenty of skiers and boarders were getting stuck on descents. It is very deep the moment you're off your skis. Bring big skis. Keep your partners close and in easy voice contact. Excavating snow for a parking spot at pass level found surprisingly-easy digging -- while the new snow has many properties of Cascade concrete, it is still quite low-density. Sun came out occasionally around 2pm and sunlight made for a beautiful sunset. Precip was flurries-to-light graupel on and off in the afternoon. Go gently tomorrow, y'all.
