Quick Observation

A very large avalanche had come down in the last few days up at Smith Basin. Surprising large propagation as it spread over two separate avalanche paths. (Arrow in photos indicates where the fracture line contined around the entire ridge. I suspect it ran on the deep persistent weak layer from November as the fracture line was up to 1.5m deep. We dug down into the snow up in the basin on a north east aspect and found this persistent layer down about 110cm and it was reactive in snowpack tests.
