Tumblewater Exploration

AvCan Vancouver Island, Wednesday 23rd October, 2024 9:32PM

We rumbled up North Tumblewater creek on sleds to check out access to the Meadows today. We chickened out at the consequential side hill move that the road transforms into at the avalanche terrain warning sign, but we traveled far enough to find a widespread new surface crust up to at least 1100m, though it likely extends quite a bit higher. Travel was especially challenging below about 800m where the crust is thicker and paired with heavy moist powder beneath it. We observed signs of loose wet instabilities on steep slopes near our high point. Mostly pinwheels but some releases that approached size 1. We might see this type of activity ramp up a bit at higher elevations when they see some warming this weekend.
