We played in the trees at Seaton today and found great snow. It was snowing and blowing out of the west from about 10am and we had 10cm snow on the truck by days end.
We didn’t see any avalanches but we avoided going into the alpine or underneath large avalanche paths as we didn’t have visibility to assess these slopes.
We dug on a SE facing slope at 1500m and found a layer of buried surface hoar sitting on top of a layer of facets 35-40cm deep. These layers failed with heavy loads (CT H, ECT N22; repeatable) but did not produce propagating Extended Column Test (ECT) results. We’ll keep watching these layers to see if their potential to produce avalanches increases as it continues snowing.
