Low Low Low does not mean good to go

packhamavalancheconsulting, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

My AST-2 class reported this avalanche on the MIN last night.Thought I would add a pic.The right side of the pic you can see the already reported size 2 down to ground. I automatically guessed that it happened towards the end of the last storm cycle, due to how common this is, but more and more I am thinking it is a more recent avalanche. The start zone is shallow and convex, and we still have a faceting snowpack. A few nights ago we were having -20 and colder temps. There is also very little surface hoar on the bedsurface indicating that it may be within the last 3-4 days. The crossloaded convex roll below where we took this photo would have been likely to fail with a ski cut. We have enough snow on top of the crust in steep terrain trap areas to cause a avalanche to step down to the facets or surface hoar below. Remember spatial variability of surface hoar can be very unpredictable. Generally I would say we have Moderate Low Low conditions if you looked generally at the whole snowpack, however there are isolated areas with a HIGH hazard rating; due to areas without bridging crusts, areas with surface hoar and highly faceted pockets. I think the general public often thinks Low Low Low is party skiing but we are far from that on sheltered, shallow and Polar aspects, especially where there are convexities. The South had more bridging layers and did seem quite safe yesterday however. Second hand information but there was a sled involvement in the Kaslo? area yesterday, at least a size 1.5. Fully buried sled/ sleds apparently everyone was ok. A Moderate rating for Alpine I feel is more accurate right now.
