Quick Observation

Had a quality day in Twin Cairn glades today. Weather was overcast, no precip, light westerly wind and a pretty steady -5C all day. Dug a quick pit at approximately 2350m SE aspect, 25 degree roll-over just below tree line and found a surprisingly deep snowpack for this time of year. Measured HS of 175cm but probing showed it anywhere from 150 to 200cm! SSV official snow plot has it at 140cm. Compression test gave a low score (5) down 15cm sudden planar on the bottom of this week's storm snow, also got a moderate 19 sudden planer simultaneously on two layers down 35 and 45 cm. These appeared to be on buried facets. The wakeup call was a hard 29 that popped out like a drawer down 75cm. Excellent ski quality below treeline with fast buttery, mid boot deep turns. Alpine looked hammered on west through southeast aspects so didn't bother. Tree wells and creek holes are legit concerns right now though. Happy Robbie Burns day - Slainte va!
