Went for a walk up the boundary glades and found a very unsupportive snowpack with ski penetration to the basal facets in many places. The weak bridging of the mid pack described in this week’s forecasts was widely evident. The snowpack was relatively thin (85-100cm) with moderate SW winds transporting snow and forming wind slabs. Compression tests yielded resistant planar results on easy taps where the fist snow in the upper snow pack interfaced with four-finger snow in the mid pack. More alarmingly, the entire snowpack was failing on medium taps with sudden planar results on 1-2mm basal facets. Plans to ski the steeper, more open lines were aborted. See pics.
