We toured the far west region of Lakes Basin today, looking for low angle terrain with enough coverage to ski. The recent snows have left some decent snow on top of the older, supportable wind slab and on the surface, things seemed stable. But anywhere we poled or dug through the cohesive slab, we were able to easily identify the underlying weak layers, anywhere we looked. Multiple hand pits revealed an average 12" of depth hoar at the base covered in a 1-2" crust, covered in 2-4" of faceted snow with the 12-18" supportable wind slab floating above that. These observations were consistent with the forecast and recent avalanche activity in the area, and we focused on avoiding rollovers, terrain traps, and any steeper, shallower snow coverage that could be hiding possible trigger points.
