Mount Mansfield.

Quick report

Approx 45cm of snow fell on Mount Mansfield and was still falling at a rate of S2. Sky condition: Obscured. Wind Speed/direction: L/SE. Temp : N/O Above treeline the snow was wind scoured and generally funky. Below treeline was low density powder that was incredibly fun to ski. In general, any slopes steeper than 40 degrees had already slid down to the bed surface overnight, leaving behind a mix of old wind slab and icy crust. Any gullies that haven’t slid are likely to slide. Avalanche terrain is likely best avoided until things settle out, and even then the better skiing is likely in the trees due to the steeper terrain sloughing to the old bed surface.

I observed evidence of two natural avalanches in the “Ultimate Chutes” area of Mount Mansfield. Time is unclear but they likely happened during the hight of the storm overnight, I also witnessed a natural avalanche at around 1:15pm on the ice climb Blind Fate.
