Cold day with calm winds, broken clouds, snowing lightly up to 1cm/hr. Started skinning at the first meadow. Snow was firm and supportive with little ski pen. Dug a pit at 1860' elevation on a NE aspect, air temp -15C. Boot pen 15cm. Total snow depth 225 cm. Multiple crusts and strong over weak layering. ECTX, but had a non propagating failure after two extra hearty whacks, down 30 cm. Buried surface hoar visible on failure surface.
