Quick report
Walk from the parking lot to the trailhead is very icy. Up to 7800' snow is hard/icy/patchy; trail shoes with microspikes would have been ideal, but touring boots were safe as well. Above 7800' conditions were firm wind affected snow. In some sections the upper few inches would crack locally around skis. Solar and windward aspects were stripped to bare rock in many places. Ski pole probing showed some areas had 40-60cm of denser over weak snow. Pit at the base of the Matterhorn Cirque showed a fairly uniform/stable top 100cm. 4F new snow over mostly 1F, some 4F, then P. HS 235cm. Shovel shear resulted in a planar break underneath the ~15cm of new snow. New snow was not strong/cohesive enough to propagate. We found more of the same structure as we climbed higher. Skiing Ski Dreams and the couloir below the base of Matterhorn Cirque and Horse Creek valley, and we saw no signs of instability. With some creativity, skating, and short sections of booting, one could ski down to 7800'
