Quick report

There is continuous poor structure in individual starting zones facing north to northeast around 10,000'. While continuous on a micro scale, on a macro scale, snow is discontinuous across multiple starting zones.

I did not see any signs of instability throughout the day.

Beautiful day. Few clouds. Winds were light from the northeast, occasionally gusting moderate. Shaded air temp at 8600' around 2pm was 50F.

Snowpack

The general height of snow on N and NE terrain off the ridge was 50-75cm.  The structure in northerly terrain around 10,000' was consistent across different start zones.

  • N-NE terrain around 10k: A stiff (pencil) slab overlayed weak (4F-F) facets. This slab supported the weight of a human and was hard to dig through. Moving down from the overlaying slab, facets comprised the majority of our snowpack. The facets increased in hardness with depth. These facets sat over a layer of ice of varying thickness on the ground.  The icy layer at the base of the snowpack was likely old snow that became saturated and refrozen during the early hours of the storm beginning 11/13.
  • While the structure was objectively strong over weak in the top half, I did not see any signs of instability. The stiff slab is brittle and did not propagate failure in an extended column test. Hard ECTN results x 2.
  • 4 separate holes confirmed a very similar general snowpack, from Mammoth Rock Bowl south to Dempseys.
  • S-SW terrain had 0-10cm and a firm crust at the surface.  The height of snow decreased with elevation on all aspects.
