Quick report
Went to Mount Aggie today, hoping to find some sun softened snow on SE slopes, since S slopes are almost totally melted out in the area. We ended up connecting three gully features with aspects between ENE and SE, but unfortunately, did not find any sun softening on any of these slopes, despite warm air temps. Instead, we found a whole bunch of variable surfaces. The shadier slopes held faceted snow and crusts, with varying degrees of supportability to both skis and boots. In some areas, we wallowed to near thigh deep, with some impressively large facets visible in our boot tracks. The E and SE facing slopes held a mixture of very textured, crusty snow and firm windboard. The crust was not softening despite lots of sunshine, probably due to how textured and three dimensional it was, even down at 9k and below. We did have some light breezes out of the east upslope as well, so this certainly played some part, although it still felt hot. Overall, coverage was thin and surfaces were tough, but there was just enough snow for mostly continuous travels.
