Quick report

Day off walk in the Swan Range.

  • We traveled on foot (slipping, sliding, postholing...) between 5000 and 6550 feet.
  • The snowpack at all elevations was either wet or moist.
  • We were able to initiate large pinwheels with snowballs.
  • Recent activity was limited to a few rollerballs out of steep and rocky terrain.

Snowpack

  • 3 to 10 inches of wet snow at middle elevations.
  • 10+ inches of wet->moist snow above 6000 feet.
  • We noticied a very thin and breakable surface crust at around 6200 feet.
  • Winds had scoured the snowpack down to a couple inches on south and west-facing ridgelines. Drifted areas held 2+ feet of snow.
