Departed Fernie in the rain this morning (in our rubber boots) for Mear Lake, where we were happy to find 5-10 cm of only-slightly-moist new snow, a partly cloudy sky, and almost no wind …. Score !
For avalanches, we saw a small cornice fall that had triggered a Size 2 Wind Slab avalanche out of steep North facing Alpine terrain; and three Wet Loose Size 2 avalanches out of south facing Alpine start zones that ran to the top of their runout zones.
Temperatures were warm: +2 at the Round Prairie staging at 1300 m, zero at the lake, and -2 at our high point of 2300 m, where the snowpack was 120 cm deep.
