Quick Observation
Today we snowmobiled at the Microwave. It was snowing lightly in the morning, and we found about 15 cm of new snow from the last storm. The wind was moderate from the southwest. The snow on any exposed terrain up near the cabin was wind-affected, so it was not that good for riding. In the trees, the snow was not wind-affected, but we did find several layers of weak, feathery crystals (known as surface hoar) that are still reactive and producing propagating results in snowpack testing. The main layer of concern is about 40 cm deep. Because of this layer of concern, we stayed away from any steep terrain in the trees, and avoided creek walls and gullies. We did not see any new avalanches but we didn't see much in the clouds!
