Did a little mini tour near the cone to dig into the snow and to practice a full profile at 12:15 p.m. today. We were at 6400' on a East/Northeast aspect. Sky was overcast, wind speed was light, with light blowing snow on a 20 degree slope. Air temp was -5C, as was surface temp. Height of snow at this location was 75cm. We found several layers of interest: The top 20cm-30 was fist hard with mostly stellar grains that were also fragmented. At 30cm we observed the ice layer, and directly below that was a one finger layer of almost 15cm. From there to the ground was 4 finger faceted sugary grains, looked as though it was depth hoar and facets. Our extended column test yielded a CTEN 4, with a failure but no propagation on the interface between the 20cm 4-finger layer and the 30cm ice layer. We felt like this will be something to pay attention to throughout this storm cycle.
