Quick report

Early-season snow is a mixed blessing. While it gets us excited for the upcoming powder season, it can also lead to the haunting development of weak basal layers.

The snow is still too shallow to recreate in, even on upper elevation slopes in the Central Bear River Range, but it is starting to stick. Now is a great time to get out your avalanche gear, replace batteries, update software, and practice companion rescue skills with your backcountry partners...

Snowpack

Dense and rimed snow showed variable characteristics of temperature and wind changes during the storm.  Much less new snow at lake level than up higher, with pockets of total snow around 1' deep observed at 8900'.
