Quick report
I toured into Tuckerman Ravine late in the afternoon to get hands and eyes on any windslabs forming from today's snow and winds. I performed at least 8 hand shears on NE, E, and SE aspects just off the floor of the ravine at 4400ft elevation. At 4-4:30pm there were strong winds in the ravine, poor visibility, light snowfall mixed with wind-driven snow, temps in the mid-teens F. I found scattered windslabs that were 10-20cm thick, 4F hardness, not well-bonded to the now-frozen old snow, that released with moderate force. Windslabs were easy to identify as they were bright white and the old refrozen snow was grey and very dirty. These slabs matched the hazard rating of Moderate: Small slabs, somewhat stubborn, on specific aspects. I wore crampons for foot travel on the floor of the ravine as the refrozen snow is very firm. The entry to Little Headwall looks enticing, but quickly becomes open water, requiring a traverse to the snowfields beneath Empress. A large party found an unexpected adventure in that zone this afternoon.
