Quick report
It was foggy, and snowing lightly most of the early day with a light cold wind. My hasty pits along the way up from about 5300' started with easy hand shears on the new foot or so of snow. As I climbed higher, the new snow held on a bit better and required more pressure to pull. Lots of large pillows up higher, especially in the clearings of the trees I toured up through. The new snow was smooth and soft, and wasn't wind affected at all on the surface. Even on the ridge no new wind waves or cornices were visible, although visibility was poor. Dug a pit about 6500' down a ways from the ridge. Results: 72" Total snow pack, West facing sheltered opening in the trees. Dung to the big hard crust about 33' deep. CT 11@16", CT 16 at 21" and CT 20 @33" (On the big crust). I skied the same aspect on a <30* slope and had super deep turns. Lots of surface sluff that wanted to run a bit, but no collapsing or other signs of instability. I would void large connected slopes and the usual suspects under cliff bands, etc. Sleds and snow bikes should really keep in toned down until this all settles out given how deep they will trench in this snow.
