We toured in the McCallum Creek area on Saturday and Sunday. Temperatures were in the single digits to teens, skies were mostly clear, and winds varied from calm to gusts of 10-20mph. Wind transport was a very obvious red flag especially on Saturday, and wind slabs were reactive on test slopes. When we dug in the snow we found generally poor structure, but our ECTs had varying results. In a snow pit at 3600’ on a 24 degree southwest aspect, we had the following test results: CTC down 4cm, CT13SC down 100cm, ECTP21 down 100cm. The column failed at the facets and depth hoar at the ground.
Avalanche
Large D2 natural avalanches were observed on the south face of peak 5479 around 4500’. We believe these occurred on the evening of Saturday 2/25 during strong northerly winds, because we were in the area all weekend and did not observe the slides until Sunday morning. From a distance, the crowns looked to be 1-2 feet deep and the largest looked about 500’ wide.
