Collapsing
isolated

Snow pack observed was 185cm deep. During the compression test the isolated column fractured on 21 taps at 140cm (CTH21@140cm) and a complete column collapse at 24 taps at 65cm (CTH24@65cm). Our Extended Column Test yielded similar results at 140, but the column only cracked and did not propagate (ECTN28@140) indicating a more stable snowpack and the potential risk for an avalanche to be low. However we did perform a shear test and the large column did fail at the persistent layer, still present, at 60 cm and from the ground, indicating that if an avalanche were to be triggered, it could be very large and extremely dangerous.

Snowpack

On a hand hardness test the snowpack ranges from really soft (fist) towards the top, harder in the middle ( 4 finger to 1 finger) and soft again towards the bottom (fist). The colder temps have allowed the snow to "base" up or become more stable.
