Avalanche: Rock Canyon

Hiked up to Rock Canyon Campground on Sunday 1-8-23. Both the Crows Foot Couloir and Grrr Couloir had run about 3 days earlier. Both had entrained a fair amount and it looked like both left piles of debris on Squaw Peak Road. The fourth slot to the west on the Crows Foot had run twice on Saturday. The first was dirty and very wet, the second was cleaner but also damp. Both likely from mid-day greenhousing with Saturdays clear sky. Both were small. I was able to spot a crown fracture (marker on map) above the 3 Crows Foot toes that varied in depth from 2' to 4'. I couldn't see any clues for trigger or failure. I'm guessing Wednesday or Thursday.

I saw what looked like a debris pile at Dry Fork & Squaw Peak Road east of the campground. Lost the contrast before I could confirm it.

There was spindrift coming off of the ridge North West of Provo Peak at 9000'.

There was about two feet of snow on a table since I was up there a couple of weeks ago. The lower foot was very dense. From rain @ 7000'.

I was able to trigger some large rollers that broke up in mid slope. Despite the pack being cold and dry.

Hale Draw mid-canyon was heavily loaded, and had a lot of ice. Nothing new had slid in the lower section.

Snow loading had dropped several trees on the roads & trails

Judging by the handful of treevalanches that dropped on my head,, I'd say they were mostly hard slabs... Cheese!
