Quick report

Our resolution for 2025 was de-rime some weather stations.  We wasted no time by visiting Aeneas Ridge.

  • We found 2 to 4 inches of new snow on top of the 2+ feet from the impressive storm that closed out 2024.
  • Stepping off of our machines and skis resulted in sinking waist deep.
  • Windward slopes have remarkable amount of unconsolidated snow available for transport
  • As of now, calm to light winds have produced little to no drifting. 
  • We cleaved off large chunks of snow and ice from the weather station and chucked them on to the slope below.  This unconventional test produced no results.
  • We speculated that if time allowed, we could probably sniff out epic and stable riding on steep but planar alpine slopes.

Time did not allow, so we returned to the sleds skiing simple terrain with short steep pitches.  We traveled one at a time on steep ascents and descents.

No obvious signs of instability. Cracking limited to the very tips of wind whales along upper-elevation ridge. Minor sluffing on slopes steeper than 35 degrees.

Snow continued to fall straight down throughout the day. Accumulated ~ 2cm on the sleds during our tour. Felt a couple light SW gusts as we gained the ridge at 11:00.

Snowpack

We saved our digging for the weather station.  Recent snow is still fist hard. Rimed precipitations particles and grauple.

Foot pen = 100cm+

Avalanche

No recent avalanches observed, though poor visibility and lighting limited views.
