Quick report

Today was an unexpected wallow through deep snow. ~ 35 cm of very light snow fell in the last 24 hours in this area. This snow is very light, and fell on a variety of bed surfaces, including rocks and dirt. Due to how light the snow is, you immediately sink to the surface below that you can't see. Exciting! Loose dry sluffing was present today on all aspects below, near, and above treeline. Instabilities were observed:

  • above hard, slick surfaces with near surface facets atop
  • on facet layers beneath unsupportable crusts.

Many obstacles are now fully burried only by very light snow, posing a hazardous situation with consequences ranging from destroying your gear, to seriously injuring yourself.  

In this area, instability was observed in the form of sluffing/sliding on and below old bed surfaces beneath the new snow. Cracking was only observed if an area was undercut. One very small soft slab was kicked off by a skiier at some point today in steep, unsupported terrain, in addition to loose dry sluffs.

Single digit temps above 10000', calm to light winds out of the NE. Continuous S-1 (light) snowfall all day, and skies mostly obscured. The sun poked through here and there.

Snowpack

HSN: 35 cm BTL and 5 - 35 cm NTL/ATL (some wind affect/transport, but not much). 
New snow is stellars, dendrites, and rimed PP.

CT tests saw breaking at interfaces. Activity in the area was limited to loose dry, except for a small soft slab set off by a skiier at some point today ATL, NE, 11000'.  Interfaces are a point of concern as snow settles, as the new snow is not bonding well to the old surfaces. 

Interfaces: 

S - SE - new snow over rocks/supportable MF crust/unsupportable MF crust with facets beneath/icy surfaces

E - N - sheltered BTL/NTL/ATL - facet crust facet combo; exposed BTL/NTL/ATL crust facet crust combo, some crusts are P - K hard wind affected surfaces, and impenetrable. 

NW - W - new snow on top of rocks (previously scoured)
