Quick report

Cracking
specific

Today was perhaps one of the worst conditions days in my book. Conditions were firm and bulletproof crust with a little bit of sastrugi and anti-tracks that resembled skiing across a lake that had frozen with a bunch of wind. Today was not the day to forget your knee pads as falling might break a kneecap. Strong gusts on Marmot would knock you off your feet from time to time on the ascent and felt stronger than reported with ESE gusts 40-50mph. Ice pellets, facets, and pieces of crust were flying through the air with the strong wind and hitting my face.
Despite the intense wind, there is not a lot of snow to transport, which will limit the size of new wind slabs. Snow picked up at 2 PM and if precipitation accumulates and wind continues, slabs will form and be possible to human trigger on the leeward aspects at mid and upper elevation. Two people were out kiting today and not another sole was in sight. We’re well passed equinox, but today felt like deep winter, with FIRM surfaces and no warming or softening to be found. It began snowing intensely at 2:30 pm above 1500' and 2" of new snow fell between 1-3pm today.

I had several small cracks 1-2" deep and no more than 3-5' long as a result of new wind slabs sitting on old firm crusts. The lack of available snow to transport likely limited any new avalanche activity today, although i couldn't see a darn thing. I did not observe any collapsing today.

The weather rapidly socked in early afternoon and engulfed the IM bowl in fog. Winds were strong and numerous times i almost got blown over. Wind speeds were recorded gusting 40-50mph on Marmot and Hatch today. It started snowing around 1pm with significant intensity beginning around 2pm. Below 1500' it was raining. Temps hovered in the 20s F above 3500'.
